Abstract:

Some people say that doing a CS degree (or any university degree) is a trap, others say it is a golden ticket to a better career in technology. In New Zealand, over 100 companies including the top 10 (such as Xero, ASB, Fonterra, Microsoft and Vector) have signed on a pledge for ‘no qualifications required’. In the area of CS, we have heard stories from the likes of Google and Facebook taking in university dropouts and boasting success. In this talk, I will examine my journey on both sides: as a CS student and as a faculty member to generate discussions on your future CS degree. These will inevitably cover topics such as how has the CS degree curriculum evolved over the past decade, and my experience recruiting for technology positions in several parts of the world. I reflect on: (i) the common belief that a CS degree is a pre-requisite for a career in technology, and (ii) the notion of securing better career prospects through different pathways such as completing a degree vs. acquiring work experience vs. completing industry certifications.
