Real-time multimedia applications are usually delay-sensitive and loss-tolerant. Multimedia communications cover a wide range of research topics, including but not limited to ubiquitous multimedia, multimedia network protocols, multimedia streaming, multimedia broadcasting and multicasting, peer-to-peer multimedia, source and channel coding, and multimedia in mobile social networks.
With the rapid development of networking technologies, ubiquitous multimedia services allow people to access multimedia contents with a high degree of freedom. The multimedia streaming technologies and related network protocols address the delivery of multimedia resources such that quality of service can be fulfilled. Multimedia broadcast and multicast services, such as mobile TV and radio broadcasting, focuses on providing efficient delivery of broadcast and multicast services within a core network. For source and channel coding, the technologies are for the encoding of a redundant information source for transmission over an error-prone channel. Last but not least, peer-to-peer multimedia in mobile social networks is about multimedia consumption over the popular social networks. In short, the researches in multimedia communications are about advancing the technologies in multimedia signal processing and wired/wireless networking such that satisfactory quality of user experience of a multimedia networking application can be delivered. This research area requires cross-layer knowledge to define and solve the issues at application, transport, network, and link layers.
