Early in my career at Microsoft, I often wondered why it takes so long for the great ideas from Microsoft Research to show up in our products.  Thus in my PhD application, I chose to focus on bridging the gap between academia and industry for my statement of purpose.  Since graduating, my experiences in Microsoft Research and product groups have further provided me additional perspectives on how to best conduct research for product impact.  In this talk, I will highlight the major differences I see between academic and industrial research, from how research topics are selected to what data and algorithms we consider.   I hope my experiences will provide useful guidance for those seeking an impactful career in the industry.

講者簡歷:

Paul Hsu is currently a principal engineer/researcher in Microsoft Taiwan AI R&D Center, focusing on computer vision and natural language processing.  He first joined the Microsoft speech recognition group in 2000 after graduating from Harvard University. After obtaining a PhD from MIT in speech recognition and natural language processing, he returned to join Microsoft Research as a researcher in 2009. There, he worked on language modeling, information retrieval, and auto-completion systems with Bing and other product teams.  Prior to moving to Microsoft Taiwan in spring 2018, he spent a year and half with the SwiftKey keyboard team in London focusing language modeling, compact data structures, and scalable decoding for mobile keyboards.
