Topic  :Real-Time Road Traffic Prediction: Experiment Platform Design and Models

Abstract:Real-time road traffic prediction plays a crucial role in achieving eco-driving for green transportation. In the literature, a variety of data-driven parametric traffic prediction methods, such as the ARMA and Neural Network models, has been proposed. In this talk, a traffic prediction experiment platform is proposed, which provides the open source geographic data and periodically updated traffic data and supports users to deploy their own shortest path algorithm and prediction model on it. In addition to the development of the experiment platform, we propose a low-complexity semi-parametric prediction model, where the temporal and spatial correlations and traffic light effect are considered at the same time. The proposed prediction model focuses on routing travel time estimation, which can be divided into two parts: estimation of queuing time for traffic lights and vehicle velocity estimation. For the queuing time analysis, the relevant traffic light information is collected from the government. For the vehicle velocity estimation, to capture the effects of dynamic road events, we exploit statistical techniques to extract spatial and temporal correlations from the empirical traffic data. These correlations are subsequently used to formulate a linear model for estimating the vehicle velocity. The experiment results show that the estimated values are closer to the actual traffic condition than those provided by Google Maps.
