講 題:Discovery of Undiagnosed Patients with Rare Diseases by Big Data Analytics: A Case Study

摘 要: In this talk, I will describe a data mining process for discovering patients likely with rare diseases but are yet to be correctly diagnosed. Patients with rare diseases are hard to be diagnosed mainly because some of the symptoms of those diseases could lead to misdiagnoses for other more common diseases. By leveraging a large-scale health insurance claims database, my colleagues and I have developed a promising data mining methodology by combining big data analytics, machine learning and descriptive diagnostics to discover suspects of rare diseases who have not yet been correctly diagnosed. This has great impact to the healthcare industry as such hard-to-diagnose diseases result in repeated misdiagnoses, which waste considerable resources and prolong the suffering periods of patients. Based on the methodology, we have designed a prototype and applied it to one of the most debilitating rare diseases, Hereditary Angioedema (HAE遺傳性血管水腫). Our results showed that previously unknown HAE patient suspects could be discovered via this data mining process with a high degree of confidence.
